Greek Orthodox Church
Mati, Greece | 5th Year School of Architecture (2023/24)
In order to commemorate the lost lives of all who perished in the fire, and create a better means of public way-finding, I designed St. Michael’s, a small, Greek Orthodox church perched on a cliff above the Adriatic Sea. It was on its site that so many Mati residents lost their lives, because the entrance to the pathway down to the sea, a dilapidated, narrow concrete staircase, was invisible from above the cliff face to those fleeing from the flames. My proposal honors the community, especially those lost, and serves as a means to instilling a sense of place and creating a public memory around the site, ensuring the safety of all those who navigate the cliffs.
