Urban Regeneration

In the aftermath of the most devastating wildfire in recent European history in 2018, Mati, a small seaside town in Attica, Greece, is facing a serious challenge. Originally, Mati was farmland with a few homes built into its steep hillside. Over the last century, it became a bedroom community for Greece, and developed a street network, numerous private homes, a church and it took on the construction of several large waterfront hotels for tourism. The construction was largely unregulated, which led to an insufficient public infrastructure.
