In the aftermath of the most devastating wildfire in recent European history in 2018, Mati, a small seaside town in Attica, Greece, is facing a serious challenge. Originally, Mati was farmland with a few homes built into its steep hillside. Over the last century, it became a bedroom community for Greece, and developed a street network, numerous private homes, a church and it took on the construction of several large waterfront hotels for tourism. The construction was largely unregulated, which led to an insufficient public infrastructure. During the fire, this bad infrastructure became a trap, preventing the evacuation of residents and leading to a tragic loss of life
